Institute for Mathematical Stochastics

W3 Professorship in Stochastics and its Applications

Institution: Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, Institute for Mathematical Stochastics
Date of Announcement: 26.06.2025
Application Deadline: 07.08.2025

The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Göttingen invites applications for a permanent professorship with civil servant status (grade W3 NBesO) at the Institute for Mathematical Stochastics starting on April 1, 2026:

W3 Professorship in Stochastics and its Applications (f/m/d)

We are looking for a dedicated and team-oriented individual with an outstanding track record regarding publications and research achievements. The intended research focus should be in a contemporary area of applied stochastics that complements and enhances the institute’s existing research strengths. This could be for example the field of algorithmic stochastics, in particular Bayesian sampling methods, of high-dimensional probability theory, the field of stochastics of discrete structures, the field of spatial stochastics or of stochastic processes in modelling and data analysis, as well as of applied stochastic analysis. The professorship is expected to play a central role in innovative fundamental research in the field of applied stochastics within mathematics in Göttingen, in an interdisciplinary and application-oriented environment.

Building on the faculty’s existing research and third-party funding activities, the professorship is expected to play a leading role in shaping and contributing to research initiatives both within the University of Göttingen and at non-university research institutions on the Göttingen Campus. Desirable are thematic links to stochastic modelling or statistical data analysis. Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding is expected.

In addition to an outstanding research profile, we also expect appropriate qualifications and the ability to deliver excellent, research-oriented teaching. The professorship actively contributes to teaching in the Bachelor‘s and Master‘s degree programmes as well as in the doctoral programme of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, by participating in the teaching portfolio of the Institute for Mathematical Stochastics. Also required is the aptitude for academic self-governance and personnel management responsibilities.

Appointment requirements are stipulated by Article 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act in the most current version of that law. As a rule, junior professors and other members of the University of Göttingen can only be considered for a professorial appointment if after the completion of the doctoral thesis they have transferred to another university or worked for a minimum of two years in research elsewhere. The University of Göttingen is a Public Law Foundation and thereby entitled to award professorships. Details will be provided upon request.

Applications from abroad are explicitly welcome. The University of Göttingen strives to increase the proportion of women in areas where women are underrepresented and therefore explicitly invites qualified female scholars to apply. The University has committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports its employees in balancing work and family life. The University is particularly committed to the professional participation of disabled employees and therefore welcomes applications from persons with disabilities. In the case of equivalent qualifications, applications from disabled persons will be given preference. In order for the University to be able to protect the interests of the applicant, information about a disability or equal status should be included in the application.

Please submit your application exclusively via the Professorial Appointment Portal addressing it to the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Göttingen no later than August 7, 2025.

If you have further questions, please contact the office of the Institute for Mathematical Stochastics (+49 551 39 172100 or stochastik@uni-goettingen.de).

The submission of the application constitutes consent under the data protection law and allows us to process your application data. For more details on the legal basis and data use, please refer to the information sheet on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Assistants wanted for the 2025 summer semester

The Institute for Mathematical Stochastics is looking for assistants for the 2025/26 winter semester for the following courses:

  • School-related fundamentals of stochastics
  • Discrete stochastics for computer science students
  • Measure and probability theory
  • Stochastic lab course
  • Cycle I: Statistical foundations of data science

There is an option to extend for the summer semester 2026.

If you are interested in an assistant position at the Institute for Mathematical Stochastics, please send your application by email to Stephanie Westphal and Dr. Tobias Kley (email: stephanie.westphal@uni-goettingen.de and CC: tobias.kley@uni-goettingen.de). Please include your name, address and email address in the email and also attach a list of the relevant courses you have attended (preferably with grades). You are also welcome to indicate a ranking in which you would like to be considered for the above courses.
